International Grassland Conference 2025 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Grassland ecosystems characterize the Alps and the Alpine foothills of southern Germany on over one million hectares. They are not only an important basis for the dairy and meat industries but also perform key ecosystem functions. They store carbon and nitrogen, regulate the water balance, protect against erosion and are important for biodiversity.

However, climate change, as well as changes in land use and management methods, pose major challenges to these valuable ecosystems.
How do these changes affect the functions of grassland?
What sustainable strategies are there for the future?
Which scientific approaches and management methods can help to preserve grassland ecosystems
in the long term?

The SUSALPS project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), invites researchers, authorities, organizations and farmers to the International Grassland Conference 2025. Exchange ideas with experts, discuss the latest research findings and jointly develop solutions for sustainable grassland management.

The Program

The conference will take place over three days and will cover both scientific and practical perspectives. This event offers a valuable platform for interdisciplinary exchange, promotes dialog between science and practice and strengthens cooperation to overcome the challenges facing grassland ecosystems.

Day 1
Science (GB)

The first day is mainly dedicated to scientific results and will include keynotes, oral and poster presentations and discussions in English. The sessions will address the following relevant grassland topics:

1) Soil Biogeochemistry and Microbiome

2) Vegetation Biodiversity

3) Socioeconomics

4) Innovative Remote Sensing and Modelling Approaches

Interdisciplinary results are also welcome.

Day 2
Excusion (GB & DE)

The second day is offered in German and English. The excursion includes a visit to the TERENO research station in Graswang and a hike to a re-grazing experiment on the Brunnenkopfalm in the Ammergau Alps. In case of bad weather, we will inform you in time about possible changes of plans.

Day 3
Workshops (DE)

The third day is primarily aimed at farmers, associations and authorities and will be held in German. In interactive workshops, practice-relevant research results from the projects SUSALPS, BLIK II, BioMON and KUHMUS_Beweidung will be bundled and discussed together with the participants.

The aim is to derive concrete recommendations for action and to record these in fact sheets.

If places are still available, scientists from other projects are also cordially invited to participate.
